7th semester project
Data of over 30 acres of land in the city of Belgaum, Karnataka. Most of the data was collected manually, and the rest was collected from the city corporation and development office
Project Brief
Belgaum City is a moderately populated city in Karnataka. This project aimed to observe and determine urban cracks, and unused spaces and a study of the local, communal, and social structure amongst the people. Identification of issues and plausible solutions through design.
Built vs Open

Over 50% of the area is open. These include un-used land plots, pathways, parks and community grounds
Land Use

The majority of buildings are for residential use and rise up to 2 storey. Thus the commercial spaces majorly cater daily essentials and local businesses.

About 20% of the total area is for public use which indicates a healthy amount of social interactions and gatherings amongst the residents. The spread-out open spaces suggests the various kind of public activity the locals engage into.

Roof Typlogy

It was documented that over 50% buildings were RCC construction, therefore had provision for further development indicating a possibility of rise in the population. Whereas the traditional houses dwindled in number,

About 70% of the total vehicles were parked along the road. On-street parking choked the roads. This issue demands organized parking space and road widening.
Occupation

Over 60% residents were employers and had businesses. Enough income is generated and provision for expansion in consumer services in this area is beneficial.
Parking pattern

Secondary and tertiary roads form majority of the traverse path. Therefore showing the potential for integrated and organized streetscape

The community is diverse, consisting Hindu and Muslim and They live harmoniously. This density mapping helps planning community spaces accordingly.

The highlighted zone was observed and documented. Identifying the major concerns and potential the site had.

Traffic caused due to bottle-neck during closing of railway-gate.

Clogged with vehicles at the peak hours.
Majorly vehicles - goods carrying vehicles to off-load goods.

Plausible solution - provision of goods-offloading nodes, also can be used as bus stops. This can reduce the traffic by 23%. .
